Frequently Asked Questions

No. Ultrasound will detect most major anomalies, but isn’t a guarantee of a normal baby.

Most of our scans require a full bladder, but some don’t, we will let you know if it is required for your scan. It is helpful for you to have some fluid in your bladder, but there is no need for you to be uncomfortable or bursting to use the bathroom. We can give you some water if you need a bit of extra filling.

We are happy for you to bring along a partner or family member to the scan. Remember to respect the sonographer’s concentration as they are doing an important job on the most important person in your life.

We are unable to have children under 6 years of age in the scan room so if they come to the appointment you will need to bring another adult to wait with them in the waiting room while you have your scan.

Your report will be prepared for you after your scan to take with you, along with some pictures. This usually doesn’t take too long. Alternatively, if you are in a hurry, we can send it to your doctor.

You can expect to be here for around an hour and a half (90 minutes). This will give you plenty of time to have your scan and speak with our counsellor or doctors and get the report. If you are to have a procedure, this may take a little longer. We usually run on time, but you can ring before arriving to check this.

Fetal sex can be identified accurately from around the morphology scan on. We always ask before telling you. If it is possible to see and you would like to know, we will tell you. Not everyone wants to know and it is not always possible — it really depends on how bashful your fetus is on the day. Some babies love to flaunt it, so it’s not always possible to hide…. but we do our best.

We allow significantly longer appointment times than other practices to ensure we run to schedule. However, the three most common reasons delays are encountered are:
